HBO Max Profiles - Responsive Redesign
Reimagined the complete HBO Max profiles experience across devices, from phones to wide-screen monitors.
In the summer of 2022, HBO Max launched it's fully responsive new mobile and web platform. As part of this effort, I led a team that reimagined our full profiles experience to work responsively from the smallest phone to the largest wide-screen monitors.
Role
Lead Designer: Responsible for end-to-end UX architecture, coordinating research, ideation, visual design, and prototyping. Led a team of 5 designers.
In summer 2022, HBO Max introduced its fully responsive mobile and web platform. The team reimagined the complete profiles experience across devices — from profile creation, editing, switching, deletion, and personalization screens — with emphasis on accessibility and visual improvements. The redesign needed to work across 7 breakpoints in approximately one month.
In a Nutshell
Most Fun
Collaborating with fellow designers under tight deadlines. The team functioned efficiently while solving substantial challenges together.
Biggest Challenge
Finding the right balance of responsiveness and simplicity. The initial approach was overly responsive and would have been convoluted for users.
In Retrospect
Would have earlier embraced an engineer's suggestion regarding character background color transparency in avatars — a refinement that significantly enhanced visual quality.
Responsive Design System
The profiles redesign required adapting every screen for 7 breakpoints while maintaining visual consistency and simplicity. The challenge was avoiding an overly responsive approach that would confuse users while still taking advantage of available screen space.
Detailed Screens
Each profile management screen was carefully designed to balance information density with clarity across screen sizes, from compact mobile views to expansive desktop layouts.
